Suggested Wedding Music: “We’ve Got Tonight”

Thanks to American Idol season 11 winner Philip Phillips, we’ve seen a resurgence in the popularity of “We’ve Got Tonight”, a Bob Seger original from 1978.

“We’ve Got Tonight” makes for a great addition to any wedding reception performance or playlist: it’s suitable for wedding bands, guest performances (by friends or relatives), the first dance as newlyweds, and might even make for a heartwarming duet, if the bride and groom can actually pull it off.

Locally, I’d say that the version of “We’ve Got Tonight” featuring Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton might be the most popular/most recognizable version, thanks to regular airplay from easy listening stations like the old Mellow Touch.

“We’ve Got Tonight”
(feat. Sheena Easton)

[Kenny:]
I know it’s late
I know you’re weary
I know your plans
Don’t include me
Still here we are
Both of us lonely
Longing for shelter
From all that we see
Why should we worry
No one will care girl
Look at the stars now
So far away
We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t you stay

[Sheena:]
Deep in my soul
I’ve been so lonely
All of my hopes fading away
I’ve longed for love
Like everyone else does
I know I’ll keep searching after today

[Kenny:]
So there it is girl
I’ve said it all now

[Sheena:]
And here we are, babe
What do you say

[Sheena:]
We’ve got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t you stay

[Kenny:]
I know it’s late
And I know you’re weary
I know your plans
Don’t include me

[Sheena:]
Still here we are

[Together:]
Both of us lonely
Both of us lonely

[Kenny:]
We’ve got tonight

[Sheena:]
Who needs tomorrow

[Kenny:]
Let’s make it last

[Sheena:]
Let’s find a way

[Kenny:]
Turn out the light

[Sheena:]
Oooooh-ho, come take my hand now

[Together:]
We’ve got tonight, babe
Why don’t you stay
Why don’t you stay

— written by Bob Seger

Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton’s live performance.  Their version came out in 1983.  This video was probably taken that year as well.

The Bob Seger original was written in 1976, but released as a single two years later.  Also, at the time, the song was released as “We’ve Got Tonite”.

Shortly after Philip Phillip’s rendition aired on American Idol, the cast of Glee also had their own version in Season 4.

(That version featured just about everyone on the show: Rachel Berry/Lea Michele, Finn Hudson/Cory Monteith [R.I.P.], Kurt Hummel/Chris Colfer, Blaine Anderson/Darren Criss, Marley Rose/Melissa Benoist, Jake Puckerman/Jacob Artist, Quinn Fabray/Dianna Agron, Santana Lopez/Naya Rivera, Artie Abrams/Kevin McHale, and Betty Pillsbury/Ali Stroker.)
